Arbitrage, often known as merchanting, is still possible, even with the Grand Exchange and trade limits. It also happens to be easier than ever. The main idea behind this is short term investing in items, whether they be skill items, such as ores, or rare items, like party hats and santa hats.
Through my experience, investing in ores seems to be the best option for investing, because of the wide range of prices of ores. This allows for the more wealthy to invest in ores like adamantite, while those with less money invest in iorn and coal. Therefore, this section will be based on investing in ores.
When first starting out, it is prudent that you familiarize yourself with prices before you begin investing. Spend a few days see what ores cost what, and when you see prices that are lower than normal, buy as much ore as you want. Copper and tin are fairly useless for investing because of their low price, but coal and iron are both feasible, while if you want to go for a larger profit, gold, mithril and adamantite are good choices. In order to make any sizable profit, you will likely need to invest in two to ten thousand of the item, depending on how expensive it is..
Now, you simply wait, and when the price gets higher, sell the ores. This is the most difficult part of short term item investment, because you never know whether the item will increase or decrease in price the next day. Once you decide to sell the ores, you can take your profit, find another ore that is at a lower price than usual and invest in that. You’ll likely only make around thirty thousand gp a day if you are investing about one million gp, but it requires nearly no work, and you can focus on other forms of making money while doing this.
