In trade, sometimes the market price of an item goes up or down. This is do to supply and demand, how many people want to buy ores, and how many ores are in stock. This is why it is always a good idea to know what ores are currently hot, and what are not.
Currently, coal is in high demand, and there are not many people who mine it and then sell the ore without it being smithed into anything. That is why coal sells for so much right now and why mithril ore, which actually requires higher levels to mine, is so cheap. However, you must always be careful, you can never be sure when Jagex is going to cut the price of an ore back or make it more expensive.
If you have an extremely high mining level, it is easy to mine rune ore and then make about 10k gold per ore. Honestly, rune ore takes forever to respawn and mine, so what I recommend is to stick with coal to make maximum cash.
