| Effectiveness | Fishing level requirement | Details | Other requirements/fishing equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| ***** | Level 5 | Sardines sell for about 34 coins each if raw, and around 4 coins when cooked. These can be fished from the Catherby shore, the southern shore of Al-Kharid, and Draynor Village. | |
| ***** | level 10 | Herring sells for about 42 coins each if raw, and around 14 coins when cooked. However while fishing these sardines are also caught, worth half as much. These are fished in the same spots as sardines. | |
| ***** | Level 15 | Catch anchovies in the same spot as herring and sardine with a small net. Anchovies sell for about 60 coins each, while the cooked versions sell for 59 coins each. Shrimp is adviseably dropped being worth much less than anchovies. | |
| ***** | Level 35 | Tuna can be caught at level 35 fishing in either Catherby or the Fishing Guild. . They sell for 146 when cooked, and 170 when raw. Also the higher your agility the more chance you have of catching two Tuna at a time. | |
| ***** | Level 38 | At this level, cave eel are caught in the same spots as slimy eel. Raw cave eels sell for 437 coins each, while cooked they sell for 222. | |
| ***** | Level 40 | Fishing lobsters is a popular way to make money for both free-to-play members and lower level pay-to-play members. There are two popular places to catch them; Karamja or Catherby. Caught at Karamja, bank is quick in TzHaar city, caught in Catherby, Catherby bank is close. One other place is Jatizso. You need to start Fremennik isles quest but it is really close to a bank and is most of the time unpopulated. | |
| ***** | Level 50 | At this level Swordfish may be caught and sold for 575 when cooked and 575 when raw. Tuna, however, is caught with them. Locations include Catherby, Fishing Guild, or Jatizso(completion of The Fremennik Trials required) Also the higher your agility the more chance you have of catching two swordfish at a time. | |
| ***** | Level 62 | Monkfish are found at the Piscatoris Fishing Colony. They tend to be caught faster than sharks, even at high levels, and sell for around 598 coins each when raw, and about 653 coins when cooked. In an hour, 250-320 monkfish are caught, depending on Fishing level. See this monkfish analysis for a breakdown of efficiency. | Swan Song completed |
| ***** | Level 65 | At this level Raw karambwan may be fished, which are worth 640 coins each. Keep in mind that the Karambwan will sometimes steal the bait from the vessel. If this happens often, it lowers profit. | Tai Bwo Wannai Trio completed |
| ***** | Level 76 | At this level sharks may be fished. Sharks are caught fairly slowly even at high levels, so it is advisable not to fish them with a fishing level lower than about 80. Raw sharks sell for around 1,477 coins each, and cooked sharks fetch for about 1,640 coins each. At 95+ Fishing 1,000 sharks are caught in 7 hours or less; on average, only about 150 sharks can be caught in an hour, even with 99 fishing. It is still arguable that this is the best conventional method of making money by fishing except possibly Rocktail fishing. Also the higher your agility the more chance you have of catching two sharks at a time. | 80 Cooking (optional) |
| ***** | Level 81+ | The Fishing Trawler minigame provides Manta rays and/or sea turtles from level 81 if the boat lasts 10 minutes without sinking.  Unlike other fish, cooked sea turtles and manta rays fetch higher prices than their raw counterparts. Cooked manta rays can sell for about 3,387 coins each while cooked sea turtles sell for about 3,029 coins. If the boat doesn’t sink, normally approximately 20 manta rays are acquired, leading to 60,000gp every 10 minutes. This is only if the player is with a good team, the boat not sinking. | 91 cooking (optional) |
| *****150k-200k/hr | Level 85 | The Living Rock Caverns is an area in the dwarven mines where high level fishers and miners can train their skills. At level 85, you are able to catch a new type of fish - Cavefish. To catch this fish, you will need normal fishing bait and good armour to defend yourself from aggressive high-level rock creatures. A raw cavefish has a market price of 1478 gold pieces and a cooked cavefish sells for 1577 gold pieces. You can gain 40,000-50,000 experience per hour fishing Cavefish and 150,000-200,000 cash. | 88 Cooking (optional) |
| *****250k/hr | Level 90 | Just like Cavefish, you can catch another high levelled fish in the Living Rock Caverns - Rocktail. To catch this fish, you will need some bait called Living Minerals. The market price of living minerals is currently 265gp (1 April 2010). Again, you will need some good armour to defend yourself from the aggressive living rock creatures. The market price for raw rocktail is 2547gp and the price for cooked rocktail is 2517gp. This is much faster experience per hour than lobsters and monkfish, reaching to 60,000 xp/h maximum. You are able to make over 250,000 gold pieces per hour using this method. | 93 Cooking (optional) |
Starting location: West of Varrock, speak with Gertrude at her house.
Quest difficulty level: Easy.
Reward: Cooking exp., chocolate cake, stew and your very own little kitten.
Quest points gained: 1.
Required Items: Raw sardine, milk and 100gp.
GERTRUDE’S CAT QUEST WALKTHROUGH
Gertrude: Gertrude will tell you that she has lost her cat (Fluffs). She will also tell you to go to the market place and speak with either Shilop or Wilough. They will tell you that the cat is at their secret playground. Ask them what would make them tell where the playground is, and then give them 100gp.
Lumber yard: Go to the lumber yard north-east of Varrock, and go over the fence where it’s broken. Go to the middle and up a ladder. Here you’ll find the cat. Try to pick it up and it’ll scratch you. Use the milk on it, and then try to pick it up again. Same thing will happen. Use a sardine on it, and it’ll say that it doesn’t want that sardine. Go back to Gertrude.
Gertrude: Tell her that you have found her cat, but that it won’t go with you. Gertrude will tell you that Fluffs loves doogled sardines. Go around to the back of her house and pick up some doogle leaves and use them with your sardines. Go back to the lumber yard, up the stairs, and use the seasoned sardine on Fluffs. Try to pick her up again, she still won’t leave, this time it’ll say that you can hear kittens somewhere.
Kittens: Go down again and search all the barrels and crates until you find a little kitten. Once you have it, go back to Fluffs, and use the kitten on her. She will run off home. Go back and talk with Gertrude to get your reward. This completes the quest.

Fishing is the basis for all runescape money made via skills. Many will disagree, but this is my belief. With 99 fishing, one can aquire 99 cooking and much gold. With a time investment, you can achieve anything in runescape with 99 fishing.
NOTE: The calculation of these levels is rough. It all depends on how many you fish you burn, how many salmon you get compared to trout, ect, ect. There is a hidden meaning to this guide though.
THERE IS 1 GOLDEN RULE. SAVE EVERYTHING. Most of the beginning fish will be saved to gain valuable cooking exp which will save much time and money in the future! Save everything! Including those 39 shrimp from level 1-5!
Lets start off with level 1- 0exp shall we?
—————————————–
Levels 1-5= Shrimp with a small net. No brainer. I recommend south of Al Kharid Bank as there is a bank very close, and as I say above, you must save everything. You must fish 39 shrimp.
Levels 6-25= Sardines bait fishing with a fishing rod and some bait. Fairly annoying task. 39 Sardines to level 10, at which you will catch 223 Herring using the same method. Probably will be more of a mix between the herring and sardines once you hit level 10. either way it’ll be around that number.
26-55= Fly fishing is a must here. I strongly reccommend barbarian village and banking your fish at the edgeville bank to the north. To reach 30 for salmon you’ll need 111 trout. After that, you’ll need about 3k feathers to be safe. odds are you’ll only use like 2.5k of them but you’ll be catching a mixture between 2.2k salmon and 3k trout.
56-90= If you want levels and you want them fast, then the only way to go here is LOBSTERS!!! Head down to Catherby and fish lobsters to 68. At 68 you’ll make your move to your new perminate home! THE FISHING GUILD!! Where you’ll be spending what seems like eternity for the next few weeks. Continue lobsters at the guild until 90. 57,553 lobsters for this baby. GOOD NEWS! When you cook all those, and the stuff before, you’ll be around 92 cooking.
91-99= In order to finish off this hellish quest you need sharks from 91-99. Only way to do it. I wouldnt suggest sharks before this as the loads take too long and you get more exp faster with lobsters. 69,892 shark. Have fun. GOOD NEWS THOUGH! Once you cook some of those, you now have 99 cooking. And 99 fishing. Congrats. More good news! For level 99 cooking you’ll only need around 29k of those sharks, so that leaves you with around 41k sharks left to sell! If you get 900ea for these (easy to sell for 900ea), you now have 36.9mil to use up.
LETS GO GET 99 FIREMAKING EY? EASY LEVEL 99 AND A REALLY COOL CAPE!
Same as before, start level 1, 0 exp
———————————-
Levels 1-15= Get off your bum and go cut some regular trees down. Merry christmas, you now have lvl 15 fm. 61 normal logs.
16-30= Same as before, go out and cut 183 oak logs and burn them.
31-45= 535 Willow logs this time. If you have a bit of work ethic in your body go cut them yourself. If not, who cares? You have 36.9mil to use up. Go buy em or something.
46-60= Go buy 1,573 Maple logs. Not like it’s gunna burn a hole in your wallet or anything….
61-99= Your home free buddy. Go buy 63,016 yew logs for 290ea NO MORE OR CASTRATE THOSE NOOB MERCHANTS WHO PUSHED THE PRICE! Ahem….uhm yes.. go get 63,016 yew logs for 290ea costing you 18.75mil.
Congrats you have 99 Fishing, Cooking, and Firemaking and 18.15mil left. Go buy yourself a pretty hat or something.
The real reason of this guide is not to show you how to get easy 99’s. Partially because there are no easy 99’s. It was to show you what the power of a little bit of work ethic can do. If you do this, you’ve been through hell and back and you can tell people what you’ve done while they stare in amazement at your capes and your work ethic. Everyone benifits. Money, respect, and a few purdy capes. Enjoy yourself.
